Kern Medical Emergency Preparedness

December 1970 under United States President Richard Nixon. The EPA is an agency of the United States federal government whose mission is to protect human and environmental health. • Emergency Department (ED): is a medical treatment area specializing in emergency medicine, the acute care of patients who present without prior appointment; either by their own means or by that of an ambulance. • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): refers to protective clothing, helmets, goggles, or other garments or equipment designed to protect the wearer's body from injury or infection. • Patient Under Investigation (PUI): A person who has both clinical features and an epidemiologic risk should be considered a patient under investigation. • Kern County Public Health Department (KCPHD): the science of protecting and improving the health of families and communities through promotion of healthy lifestyles, research for disease and injury prevention and detection and control of infectious diseases Is this the definition of KCPHD? • Emergency Medical Services (EMS): A system of services organized to provide rapid response to serious medical emergencies, including immediate medical care and patient transport to definitive care in an appropriate hospital setting. • Hospital Incident Command System (HICS): An incident command system (ICS) designed for hospitals and intended for use in both emergency and non- emergency situations. Is this the definition of HICS? • Highly Infectious Disease (HID): Infectious diseases are caused by pathogenic microorganisms, such as bacteria, viruses, parasites or fungi; the diseases can be spread, directly or indirectly, from one person to another. • Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI): The AAMI standards program consists of over 100 technical committees and working groups that produce Standards, Recommended Practices, and Technical Information Reports for medical devices. • Powered Air Purifying Respirator (PAPR): a device equipped with a face piece, hood or helmet, breathing tube, canister, cartridge, filter, canister with filter or cartridge with filter and a powered blower. Equipment:  All equipment contaminated with blood or body fluids shall be decontaminated, if possible, or labeled as contaminated, prior to internal or external disposal/repair/maintenance release from the unit to minimize environmental contamination and the risk of exposure to employees, servicing representatives and /or the manufacturer.

Procedure  Examine equipment for contamination prior to handling, servicing and shipping. It can be cleaned with hospital disinfectant wipes used for equipment decontamination.
