Kern Medical Emergency Preparedness

The Fire Department, Hospital Administration, Nursing Administration, or House Manager will be responsible for initiating the evacuation order. • DEPARTMENTAL RESPONSIBILITIES: Refer to references. • PBX RESPONSE: “Code Red” is activated and the operator:  Announces overhead three times: “Your attention please, Code Red, location” and page “Code Red” Group in the Info Rad Paging System.  Document the location and cause in the Log book.  Code Red to be cleared by Engineering or House Supervisor.  Once “Code Red” has been cleared it will be announced overhead three times: “Your attention please, Code Red all clear.”  Contact Fire Department to clear and reason for the Code. • GENERAL INFORMATION:  It is the direct responsibility of every Department Head/Supervisor to instruct every employee under his/her supervision as to the employee's duties in the event of a fire.  Personnel will not use elevators during a fire.  Most fire extinguishers used in the hospital are class A-B-C.  When using a fire extinguisher in the hospital proceed by using PASS : P - Pull the pin A - Aim low S - Squeeze the lever S - Sweep from side to side • DOCUMENTATION: In the event of a “Code Red” the location and cause are documented in PBX and Security.
