Kern Medical New Hire Guide 2024
Multi-Drug Resistant Organisms (MDROs) • MDROs are difficult to contain once an outbreak has been identified because the treatment options are limited. This is because the organism is resistant to some antibiotics. o If an outbreak occurs, it must be reported to the California Department of Public Health (CDPH). o MDROs can lead to healthcare-associated infections (HAIs). • MDROs are resistant to multiple types of antibiotics because of the following: o Overuse of antibiotic therapy. o Not completing antibiotics. o Antibiotics prescribed when they are not needed. • ICU and critical care patients are at greatest risk for developing an MDRO. o However, even a healthy person can develop an MDRO. Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (MRSA) MRSA is resistant to multiple antibiotics. Each patient admitted is screened for this organism, and tested if they meet specific criteria. Prevention • Infected patients are placed on contact isolation if the organism is found in the blood or in a wound. • Follow standard precautions and perform hand hygiene.
