Core Clerkships

This core rotation, comprised of both ambulatory and inpatient settings, introduces students to the various topics of general internal medicine. Serving a social-economic and ethnically diverse population, students are immersed into primary, tertiary and specialty care. By the end of their clerkship, students are well on the way to developing a rational, evidence-based approach to the evaluation and care of hospitalized adult medical patients at Kern Medical and Adventist Health Bakersfield, and patients encountered in ambulatory settings.

Overview The faculty, fellows and resident physicians of Kern Medical are dedicated, enthusiastic and committed to the education of our medical students. Our faculty consider the time and experience on our clerkships very valuable, and strive to enhance the learning environment for all. Students participate in educational programs that meet accreditation standards set by their respective medical schools. Currently, Kern Medical offers the following core clerkships:

This rotation really helped strengthen my clinical judgement and patient care skills. I loved the team dynamic and learning about both inpatient and ambulatory. – Valerie E., Medical Student The patient population is very diverse, leading to challenging cases and rare disease pathologies. I couldn’t have asked for a better IM core rotation. – Christine G., Medical Student This rotation really gives you a feel of what it’s like to be a resident. You work hard, you present patients to attendings, and help residents. Even as a medical student, you’re given autonomy and feel like you are a colleague and part of a team. – Michael D., Medical Student
