Respiratory Protection Respirators A special mask called an N95 respirator is used to protect the respiratory system from germs. • Requires initial and annual “fit” test for proper use. • Self-mask fit with each use. Powered Air Purifying Respirators (PAPRs) • Used by staff during high risk procedures on patients who are on airborne or droplet precautions. o High risk procedures can be bronchoscopy, intubation, and aerosolized medication treatment • Also used by staff who cannot pass a mask fit test due to facial hair or other reasons.

• N95 respirators cannot be used by staff with facial hair, other than a small moustache.
