MAKING THE ROUNDS

KERN MEDICAL YEAR IN REVIEW

Amir Berjis, MD, MACM, FACS, FCCP Director of Medical Education

For over 68 years, Kern Medical has served a dual purpose as the county’s sole public safety net hospital, tasked with providing care to the most vulnerable and susceptible patient population, and as the premiere academic teaching hospital in the southern Central Valley. Our Internal Medicine Residency Program was founded in 1957 and is the oldest training program in the region. Our General Surgery Residency Program, originally established that same year, is poised to return with newly matched residents this July 2025. Once again, Kern Medical is leading the way in both graduate (GME) and undergraduate medical education across Kern County. Over the last two years, Kern Medical has received accreditation for three new programs from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). These include the aforementioned General Surgery Residency, Addiction Medicine Fellowship, and Transitional Year Residency. We now sponsor ten ACGME-accredited residency and fellowship programs, in addition to an accredited Pharmacy Residency and Simulation Fellowship. We are currently applying for a new Family

Medicine Residency Program slated to start in 2027 and planning on additional medicine subspecialty fellowships later in this decade. These GME programs are designed to fill in the gaps for both primary and subspecialty care, so vital for our underserved population. Kern Medical represents the most successful recruiter of future physicians into our region. Nearly 6,000 unique applicants applied to our residency and fellowship programs this past year; including over 670 applicants for our newly accredited General Surgery program alone! Nearly 600 separate interviews were conducted by our programs for a total of 42 positions spanning all first-year residents’ slots.

Seventeen of our previous medical students were accepted into our residency programs, of which two were residents of Kern County. The vast majority of our matched applicants were from US based allopathic and osteopathic medical schools. The demographics of our applicants demonstrate a large portion that were born in the 1990s. These millennials embody the next generation of physicians who will be tasked with providing care to a growing patient population that is not only aging, but presenting with higher acuity illnesses. As clinical educators, our faculty are poised in motivating and teaching these young physicians through hybrid educational models, high-fidelity simulation, and the application of artificial intelligence. From GEN Y to GEN Z, Kern Medical stands ready to provide the most supportive, safe, and highest quality clinical learning environment for our learners.

As we prepare to welcome our new trainees, we are also proud of our 2025 class of graduates, the largest in the history of Kern Medical. Eight of our graduating residents and fellows (25%) will continue to practice in Kern County, with several staying on as new faculty in our programs.

Among our graduates are our inaugural fellows from our Addiction Medicine and Simulation programs. An additional eight graduating residents are seeking further fellowship training, three of which in our own accredited fellowships at Kern Medical. The Central Valley of California is in desperate need of physicians, both primary care and specialists. Kern Medical is doing its part through recruitment and retention of not only our graduates, but new, highly-trained faculty as well. Our institution is also focused on undergraduate medical education. Kern Medial and Western University of Health Sciences have expanded our collaboration, providing the opportunity for for 64 osteopathic students from Western to complete their 3 year clinical clerkship at rd

at Kern Medical starting in July 2025. These students will be joining medical students rotating from the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA and the Keck School of Medicine of USC. Additional cohorts of 4 year medical students also perform rotations at our institution through the Association of American Medical Colleges Visiting Student Learning Opportunities program. The goal is for us to identify students who are passionate about our mission and recruit them into our residencies. th Over the last several years, we have worked diligently with our local colleges and university to establish linkage agreements that in turn will provide structured pathways for local students to seek a career in healthcare. Students matriculating at Bakersfield College and/or California State University, Bakersfield, will have the opportunity to enter this pathway early in their undergraduate career. By meeting specific and well-defined metrics, these students will then have the opportunity to enroll at Western University to obtain their osteopathic medical degree, whilst performing their 3 and 4 year clinical rotations at Kern Medical. Our goal is to increase the supply of primary care physicians into the Central Valley. rd th These pathways will ensure that we train the next generation of diverse physicians who are from Kern County, represent our patient population, and are willing to give back and serve in our area upon completion of residency training.

Despite all our growth, Kern Medical still relies upon federal and state funding and support from our community. We represent the safety net for the county and our success ensures that all citizens, irrespective of nationality, race, or income will receive care that represents the highest standards of patient safety and excellence. Together, we can continue advancing excellence in patient care, education, and innovation for Kern County.
