MDR Acinetobacter baumannii, VRE, and C. difficile • MDR Acinetobacter capable of surviving on surfaces for as long as 5 months • Vancomycin-resistant enterococci passes from person to person by contact with contaminated hands • Clostridium difficile is shed in feces and passed by touching surfaces, devices, or materials that are contaminated • All are difficult to contain once and outbreak occurs, can cause death, and are spread from poor hand hygiene Infection Prevention = Patient Protection • YOU are the patient’s greatest defense against infection in the hospital! • Perform Hand Hygiene often and when required and encourage others to do this as well • Always use standard precautions & follow any isolation precautions in place • Ask questions: • Dr. why is the patient still intubated? • Dr. does the patient still require that femoral central line? • To a housekeeper “excuse me, could you please perform hand hygiene after you remove your yellow isolation gown?” • To a visitor “Can I help you put on the right PPE to visit this patient?” • Make suggestions to improve IC processes to supervisors and/or the office of Infection Control Contact Information Kristi Brownfield, RN, CIC Infection Control Coordinator
