Acute Care Services Acute Care Services is composed of Medical Surgical and Telemetry, Intensive Care, and Direct Observation patient care areas. Our nurses understand the vital role they play in assisting patients in achieving their health care goals and work closely together along the care continuum to meet the special needs of each patient. We are dedicated to fostering safe, healing environments and providing patient centered care with kindness and compassion. Our Acute Care Team includes, Clinical Nurse Leaders (CNLs), Staff Nurses, EKG Monitor Technicians, Patient Care Technicians, andNursingAttendants whowork alongside our multiple specialty services (Physical Therapy, Dietary, Speech Therapy, Cardiopulmonary, Pharmacy, Laboratory, Patient Educators, WoundChampions, PalliativeCare, Vascular Access) to support the nursing and medical plan of care. Our Clinical Nurse Leaders are expert nurses who serve as mentors and provide resources in their specialty areas. The CNL is instrumental in ensuring quality care and adherence to established standards of practice. Our nurses are committed to excellence and are proud of their achievements in reducing: Hospital Acquired Pressure Injury (HAPI), Catheter Associated Urinary Tract Infection (CAUTI), Central Line Associated Blood Stream Infection (CLABSI), Ventilator Associated Events (Ventilator Associated PNA-VAP), Surgical Site Infection Reduction, and Patient Falls. Our Nurses are proactive and prioritize bedside report, hourly rounds, bedside physician rounds, interdisciplinary rounds and timely communication with the healthcare team. Our nursing leaders have over 85 years of collective nursing experience and are dedicated to recruiting quality team members and helping our nurses achieve their professional goals. Vascular Access

Our Vascular Access Service is composed of a team of Registered Nurses who have received specialty training in the insertion, care and management of central venous accesses. They are able to consent, insert PICCcatheters and verify placement through guidance system. They are a resource to patients, nurses, and physicians and are able to establish IV access on the most difficult vasculature with the use of ultrasound guidance. They are a consultative service and provide Monday through Saturday coverage. Our nurses are both certified in their specialty and are included in our new grad orientation program.

Emergency Department Kern Medical has a goal of providing the highest quality, compassionate care and service in an efficient and timely manner. Services are provided 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. There is a team of specially trained physicians, nurses, and dedicated support staff to handle a wide range of medical conditions. Trauma Center Kern Medical operates the only Trauma Center between Fresno and Los Angeles and offers the highest level of care available for a traumatic injury or illness. Having the trauma team available and constantly ready to respond can make the difference between life and death for critically injured patients

Maternal Child The Kern Medical Maternal Child nursing staff provide high level care to over 400 moms and babies each month. These patients include some of the highest risk pregnancies in the county. Our medical and nursing staff partner with UCLA, Valley Children’s Hospital, CHLA and Fresno Community Regional hospitals to plan care and initiate referral/transfers for Perinatal and NICU services. Private post partum suites are available to new mothers. Our 28 bedNICUallows our team to care for many of the county’s smallest and sickest neonates. Kern Medical often accepts transfers into our NICU from other local hospitals. We round out Kern Medical’s Maternal Child Services with our Pediatric Department. The Maternal Child nurses at Kern Medical provide loving support to our patients from birth through adolescence.

Peri Operative Services Surgical Services includes, Preadmit, Testing, Preop, Holding Room, OR, PACU, Diagnostic Treatment Center (DTC) and Sterile Processing Department (SPD).  Kern Medical has 8 OR suites that average 450 patients per month.  Kern Medical serves patients ranging from children to geriatric and offers all surgical specialties, except cardiac services and organ transplants.  Our very busy OR works hard to meet the needs of all elective, urgent, and emergent surgeries. OR Staffing is 1:1 which always includes an RN.  Kern Medical has surgical technicians to fill the scrub role but RNs can also fill this role.  The da Vinci Robot

Kern Medical is proud to have the latest technology for surgical procedures with the da Vinci robotic Surgical System that enables surgeons to perform operations through a few small incisions and features several key features, including: • Magnified vision system that gives surgeons a 3D HD view inside the patient’s body • Ergonomically designed console where the surgeon sits while operating • Wristed instruments that bend and rotate far greater than the human hand Sterile Processing Department (SPD)

SPD processes and sterilizes all instruments and trays for the entire organization.  Kern Medical processes over 5,000 items per month. This area employs Certified SPD Technicians and works very closely with the OR/Outpatient Clinic staff. Perianesthesia Services/Diagnostic Treatment Center (PACU/DTC) PACU/DTC services cares for over 500 patients a month.  PACU has a 1:1 or 2:1 ratio caring for all types of post procedural/surgical patients including critical care patients.  DTC performs all types of outpatient and inpatient endoscopies, infusions, transfusions, and minor procedures.

Stroke Program Kern Medical is a Joint Commission Certified Primary Stroke Center. With this certification, Kern Medical joins an elite group of health care organizations focused on highly specialized stroke care. Kern Medical provides the most advanced stroke care through well-developed teams of physicians, nurses, technicians and ancillary teams to provide the highest level of care. Our highly trained stroke team is on- hand 24/7, making fast response times and positive outcomes a reality.

Wound Care Wound care RNs work thoughout the hospital and in an outpatient clinic specializing in treating wounds. Nurses and Physicians, send consults for wound identification, wound treatment, and complicated ostomies. Wounds are identified with suggested interventions given to prevent pressure ulcers. Education is given to nurses, physicians, and patients.

Behavioral Health The 24-bed Inpatient Behavioral Health Unit offers expert diagnosis and treatment for patients aged 18 and older with mood disorders such as Depression, Bipolar Disorder, thought disorders including Schizophrenia, and substance abuse disorders. Patients are evaluated and treated by an interdisciplinary team of Psychiatrists, Nurses, and Social Workers. Kern Medical Inpatient Behavioral Health Unit is the only unit in Kern County that treats patient with mental illness and co-occurring chronic medical conditions.

Infection Prevention & Employee Health The Infection PreventionDepartment and the EmployeeHealthDepartment are integratedand both work in collaboration to promote health and prevent infection across our organization. Infection Prevention focuses on the prevention of disease in the healthcare setting aimed at protecting the patients we serve, while Employee Health is focused on the promotion of health and wellness of the employees working within our organization. The Infection Preventionists at KernMedical are skilled in epidemiology and infection prevention practices and work to ensure that professional practice at Kern Medical follows Center for Disease Control guidelines. The team works tirelessly to educate about hospital acquired infections, perform surveillance to ensure compliance, teach clinical staff about best-practice guidelines and reports activity and successes to the Joint Commission and other regulatory bodies as warranted. The primary goal of the Employee Health Department is to maintain the health and well-being of the employees of our organization. The Employee Health Department achieves this goal through identification and remediation of occupational hazards, health promotion through injury prevention, immunization, and the development and implementation of education and wellness programs.

Care Coordination The Care Coordination team is a dedicated group of healthcare professionals that work with patients to ensure that the highest level of integrated and personalized care is rendered while ensuring that services are delivered in an effective and timely manner. Members of the Care Coordination team work collaboratively with the patient, their families and third party entities to facilitate communication and ensure all linkages and arrangements necessary to help an individual transition effectively from the hospital to the most appropriate next level of care is achieved. Staff Development The Staff Development Department supports the Mission and Vision of Kern Medical by providing educational support for all members of the workforce. Nurse Residency Program This formal, structured post-nursing school new graduate program is part of the Vizient/ American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) Nurse Residency Program™. Aligned with the nation’s top residency curriculum (Vizient/AACN) our new graduate residents have the opportunity for training and education in critical thinking to lead at Kern Medical. Nurse residents participate in an evidence-based program focused on three core areas: leadership, patient outcomes, and professionalism. Benefits of this program for new graduate nurse residents include: competence and confidence in decision making, access to a learning network, satisfaction and professional commitment, consistent use of evidence- based practices, leadership and critical thinking skills, relationship building, efficiency and safety on the floor, and quality of care. Health Benefits Packages With our health benefits packages, you and Kern Medical share the cost of providing for your coverage. Kern Medical offers five plans to accommodate your personal needs. Each health benefits package includes medical, prescription, vision, and dental coverage. The coverage level you select – Employee only, Employee + One, or Family – and the medical option you choose – determine your contribution amount. Biweekly contributions range from $0 - $240.

Paid Time Off (PTO) & Holidays PTO is accrued under the following schedule: Years Of Service PTO Days/Year 0-4 18 (144 hours) 5-9 23 (184 hours) 10-14 28 (224 hours) 15+ 33 (263 hours) PTO is prorated based on hours worked. Benefit Highlights Pre-Licensed to Licensed Nurse

Retirement Defined

Benefit Retirement Plan (Kern County Employees’ Retirement Association - KCERA) Members are required to make contributions to KCERA through biweekly pre-tax payroll deductions. Your contribution amount is based on a percentage of your base pay plus any special pays.

This plan provides you with retirement, disability and death benefits with a five year vesting period. Vesting means you are entitled to a monthly benefit at retirement, regardless of additional service. For employees newly hired on or after October 27, 2007, you will be enrolled in General Tier II. General Tier II employees are also eligible for New Employee Premium Pay equal to 6% of your base salary. 457(b) Deferred Compensation Retirement Plan This plan allows you to save a percentage of your pay on a pre-tax basis through a voluntary salary contribution. Your and Kern Medical’s contributions to the plan and any earnings they generate are always 100% vested. Kern Medical will match up to 6% of employee contributions made to this plan.
