Hand Washing The most effective action you can take to protect our patients and yourself • Hands visibly soiled – soap and water • If not visibly soiled – okay to use alcohol-based rub • “Purell Instant Hand Sanitizer” units mounted all over Kern Medical • While in patient care areas – use only hospital approved hand sanitizers and lotions. • Leave in your car or at home • After using the bathroom – use soap and water • Minimum 15 second wash – rub with hand sanitizer until dry • When to wash and when to sanitize • Keep your skin intact Environment and Equipment Cleaning Keeping the environment and equipment clean is crucial to preventing the spread of infection • Patient care equipment is cleaned by the user in between patient use (if not disposable) • Follow contact or kill time for all disinfectants and cleaning products
